War on the Run by John F. Ross
Major Robert Rogers has always been an interesting man to discuss while I served in the Army. I never attended Ranger schools or served in Ranger Battalion but I feel as though I understand this unit pretty well. Hundreds of the men I served with were real Rangers, those that came from the Battalion. This book should be mandatory reading for every member of the US Army for sure. It reads like a who’s who of history of America. From John Stark, “Live Free or Die”, to Thomas Gage a sad example of a British military officer. Men like Israel Putnam served with Rogers as did many more influential and brave men. Absolutely one of the best books I’ve read about that era of our country. Fort Carillon, later renamed Fort Ticonderoga is a central theme of this book. Rogers goes from hero to traitor in some peoples minds but he performed gallantly as a provincial under the British flag. He is an American there is no doubt. This book covers his entire life, from meager beginnings to an even more meager end.
